About the Author
Douglas Oliver received a B.A. from Harvard and a Doctor of
Philosophy from the University of Vienna. During World War II
he advised the U.S. government on Pacific Island affairs. An
emeritus professor of anthropology at Harvard and the University
of Hawaii, he has documented his field work throughout the Pacific
in numerous national and international publications
