Some recent arrivals find Hawaii's Christmas lacking.
"What is that, snow from a can?" they'll say in their Midwestern twang.
Here's our answer to them:
We even have our own Christmas tales - "Numbah One Day of Christmas" in pidgin, and "Ke Ahiahi Mamua O Kalikimaka ("Twas the Night Before Christmas in Hawaii)" in Hawaiian - so naner naner naner.

The beloved Christmas poem by America's Clement C. Moore takes on a Hawaiian flavor in Ke Ahiahi Mamua O Kalikimaka. This brightly illustrated picture book includes a facsimile of Moore's original hand-written script of Twas the Night Before Christmas, thus becoming an addition to the various English versions. But it goes beyond that, showing how various key words look and sound in Hawaiian. The illustrations are also appropriate to a Hawaiian child's Christmas. A glossary of Hawaiian words and phrases and a pronunciation guide are included. End papers celebrate the holiday in music with a song Mele Kalikimaka, meaning Merry Christmas. This book would be a fine choice for multi-cultural collections. For all ages.
