Beautiful photographs capture the essence of two of Hawaiʻi's favorite holidays.  Brief text describes the origin, significance and customs of Girls' Day (March 3rd) and Boys' Day (May 5th), highlighting the similarities and differences between community, school and family celebrations in Japan and in Hawaii. The binding produces two books in one with two front covers. Girls' Day features dolls kimonos and hishi-mochi diamond-shaped rice cakes. Boys' Day features carp kites samurai iris kashiwa-mochi rice cakes and chimaki rice dumplings. Both books include many photos of girls and boys enjoying their special days.

Minako Ishiiʻs travels as a business analyst with Sony furthered an early interest in world cultures. Her photographs which have appeared in international national and Hawaii publications and her business Beyond Borders reflect her belief in both the importance of cultural preservation and in children's potential to bridge boundaries.
